Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim
Akhand, Assistant Professor of the Department of Genetic Engineering &
Biotechnology is going to start a project with the financial aid of the
Government of Bangladesh. His project title is: The mechanism of
arsenic-mediated intracellular signal transduction in animal cells.
In Bangladesh, arsenic is known as a devastating pollutant that has
caused an environmental tragedy in some areas where a large population
has been drinking arsenic contaminated ground water. Alarming number of
toxicity cases have so far been reported in these areas, in which
arsenic has been primarily found to cause skin lesions ands skin cancer.
The aim of the project is to identify the arsenic-mediated intracellular
signal cascades that are involved in various complex diseases. This
would explain how the signal delivery pathways would affect cellular
functions focusing on the molecular mechanism leading to invention of a
new therapeutic approach.
2.Science
Club: A science club
has been established in our department. This club will act as a platform
for the science minded people of our country. The student adviser of our
department is the moderator of the club. The club is arranging seminars
on various topics of science. In future it will run research programs.
We hope one day the club will bring renaissance in the science sector of
our country.A science
magazine names "Biogen" is being published from the club
regularly.

room is established in this department. Students can use this room for
their studies. A number of different text books covering differing

5.Fifty
years celebration of DNA Structure: This year our department has celebrated 50
years of DNA structure. On this occasion we had arranged a public
exhibition together with British Council. In this exhibition we

Computer facility with Broadband Internet connection:
We have recently established a computer room starting with four
computers. All these computers have Internet access and are always ready
for use by the students. This online facility of the computers will
certainly facilitate the students to know the latest developments of the
genetic engineering technologies and other related matters.
