Overview
Ex-Vice Chancellor Prof. A. K. Azad Chowdhury along with Faculty Members at the GEB Premises
The Department of Biochemistry, University of Dhaka in an Academic Committee meeting on the 24th of March, 1998 had proposed the formation of a new department called Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology considering the advancement in this area. This proposal was approved by the Faculty of<<Selection in Document>> Biological Sciences on a meeting on the 29th March, 1998. The decision to establish this new department called Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology under the Faculty of Biological Sciences was taken by the Syndicate on November 20, 1999. 
Dr. Anwar Hossain, Professor of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka was made the Project Director on December 01, 1999. He developed the course curricula of the new department, which was approved by the Faculty of Biological Sciences on a meeting on July 29, 2000. 
 
On January 24, 2001 Dr. Haseena Khan, Professor of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology was made the first chairperson of the department. The Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology started its Honours degree programme for the Session 2000-2001 with 13 students, among them 6 male and 7 female students.
 

 

The department has at the moment six part-time teaching positions. Class room and laboratory facilities have been developed on the first floor of the Science Workshop in what used to be Dean Office for the Science and Biological Science Faculties. This space had been made available by the then Dean of Science, Dr. Mesbauddin Ahmed, Professor, Department of Physics,University of Dhaka.
